The population of the city in 2006 was 49,240, making it the Irish Republic's fifth largest city. Waterford (from the Old Norse: Verafjrr meaning “Windy fjord” or in Irish “Port Lirge” meaning ‘Hilly Shore’) is the primary city of the South East region. Founded in 914 AD, by the Vikings, it is Ireland's oldest city. It is the fifth largest city in the country of Ireland. The city is situated at the head of Waterford Harbor (Cuan Phort Lirge). Waterford is the largest city in Ireland to retain its Viking-derived name, Vedrarfjord. The city motto Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia ("Waterford remains the untaken city") was granted by King Henry VII of England in 1497 after Waterford refused to recognize the claims of the pretenders Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck to the English throne. The River Suir flows through Waterford city and has provided a basis for Waterford's long maritime history. Waterford Port has been one of Ireland's major ports for over a millennium. In the 19th century shipbuilding was a major industry in the city. The owners of the Neptune Shipyard, the Malcomson family, built and operated the largest fleet of iron steamers in the world between the mid-1850s and the late-1860s. Today, Waterford is synonymous with Waterford Crystal the world over, a legacy of one of the city's most successful and enduring industries, glass making. Glass, or crystal, has been manufactured in the city since 1783.
Dublin (in Irish, Baile tha Cliath, meaning “Town of the Hurdled Ford”) is both the largest city and capital of Ireland. It has a urban population of 1,661,185. It is located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin Region. Founded as a Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's primary city for most of the island's history since medieval times. Today, it is ranked 13th in the Global Financial Centres Index, is an economic, administrative and cultural centre for the island of Ireland and has one of the fastest growing populations of any European capital city.
Repentance
Modern religion, with it’s ever-changing concepts, has left confusion in the minds of many people concerning true repentance. What does the Bible really say? Don’t be satisfied with theories and ideas of men, when you can know the truth about this important subject.
WHAT IS REPENTANCE?
Repentance is a religious term that denotes a redirection of a person’s mind, will and actions as indicated in the Greek word metanoia-a change of mind. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary.
Repentance is both sorrow for sin and the act of turning away from it. Encyclopedia Americana, Edition 1983 Vol. 21, p.495.
The turning from sin is emphatically a matter of conduct, but it is also a matter of the heart. Dictionary of the Bible, by James Hastings, Vol, IV, p.225.
Repentance in the ethico-religlous sense is turning away from sin and back to God. Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible, Edition 1962, Vol. IV, p.33.
The nature of repentance is not only a turning from, but also a turning to. It will cause a person to stop a wrong action and begin a right one.
IS REPENTANCE IMPORTANT TO SALVATION?
Ezekiel announced, "Thus sayeth the Lord God REPENT, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations." Eze. 14:6. John the Baptist preached, "REPENT YE: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Mat. 3:2. God COMMANDETH all men everywhere to REPENT. Acts 17:30. "Except ye REPENT, ye shall all likewise perish." Luke 13:3. (Also 2 Peter 3:9.)
Jesus commissioned, as He opened the understanding of His disciples to the Scripture, "That REPENTANCE and REMISSION of sins should be preached in His Name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem." Luke 24:47. In response to the question, "What shall we do?" Peter said, as he fulfilled the Lord’s commission, "REPENT, and be baptized everyone of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Acts 2:38.
Certainly true repentance is a command of God, and necessary for Divine forgiveness; therefore, it is definitely an important step in God’s wonderful plan of salvation for man.
HOW TO REPENT
1. Conviction Of Sin
Before there can be true repentance, a sinner must have an understanding and acknowledgement that he is guilty of sin. "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." Rom. 5:12. (Also Rd. 3:23.) "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law (God’s Word)." 1 John 3:4. Therefore, it is against God (Ps. 51:4) and is punishable by death (Eze. 18:20). "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Rom. 6:23. A transgressor is also guilty of the blood of Jesus Christ, because the Lord hath laid on Him (Jesus Christ) the iniquity of us all. Is. 53:6. Yet, in Jesus Christ we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Col. 1:14. But, unless a sinner repents he will stand condemned before God on judgement day, forever to be lost (Luke 13:3; Jude 15; Rev. 21:8).
The knowledge of God’s Word will reveal sins in a person’s life, which will bring conviction. When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, they that heard God’s Word were pricked (convicted) in their heart. Acts 2:37.
Also experiences of God’s chastisements add to conviction. God said in His Word, "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent." Rev. 3:19. Although conviction of sin brings an uncomfortable feeling of shame and guilt, when followed by true repentance, it will lead to great rejoicing!
2. Godly Sorrow
Feelings of deep sorrow, regret and remorse over sin must accompany an individual’s repentance. One should not sorrow for personal hardship brought on by sin, but rather remorse over the hurt he has caused a loving, forgiving God. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner ... For godly sorrow, worketh repentance to salvation . . . but the sorrow of the world worketh death." 2 Cor. 7:9.10. (Also Joel 2:12; Ps. 34:18.)
3. Will to Repent
The prodigal son came to himself and said. "I WILL arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee." Luke 15:18. If a sinner is willing to repent, God is willing to forgive him of his sins. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3:19.
4. Plead for Mercy
The first thing David said in his prayer of repentance was, "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions." Ps. 51:1. Divine forgiveness is not based upon the accumulated merits of man, but only on the love and mercy of God. ..... While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Rom. 5:8. "The publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner." Luke 18:13. In approaching God, we must cast ourselves without reservation upon His mercy.
5. Confession to God
"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." Pro. 28:13.
A person must be honest; admit his sins; confess them openly to God: not to man. "If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." 1 John 2:1.
6. Forsake all Sin
Ezekiel said, "Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit." Eze. 18:31. Jesus said to the woman taken in adultery, "...Go, and SIN NO MORE." John 8:11. (Also 1 Thes. 5:22; 2 Cor. 6:14-17; 1 John 2:15-16; Titus 2:11-12.)
Repentance is actually a crucifixion of one’s sinful nature at an alter of self denial (Ro. 6:6; Mark 8:34). A sincere person must turn from all sin and begin a new life in Christ. Paul wrote, "Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid, How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" Ro. 6:1,2. (Also 1 John 3:4-9.)
7. Ask God for Forgiveness
After a sinner has surrendered all to God, he should simply ask God to forgive him for all his sins. The Bible said, "Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto Him, Take away all iniquity (sin)." Ho. 14:2. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9.
8. Receive God’s Forgiveness
To receive God’s forgiveness, you must forgive others. "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." Mat. 6:14. Also, you must forgive yourself and forget your sinful past. Paul said, "Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Phil. 3:13,14. When you have truly repented, accept God’s forgiveness and praise Him! "Though your sins be as scarlet, they SHALL BE WHITE AS SNOW; though they be like crimson, they SHALL BE AS WOOL" Is. 1:18. "For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy. Ps. 86:5.
RESULTS OF REPENTANCE
1. Great Joy
When the prodigal son repented, there was much rejoicing. Luke 15:23. Jesus said, "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance." Luke 15:7. There is great joy in knowing God’s wonderful forgiveness! When the Samaritans gave heed to Philip’s preaching, there was great joy in that city. Acts 8:5-8.
2. New Birth
Now that the old sinful man is dead through repentance, a believer is ready for the "new birth," which consists of the two elements, water and spirit. Jesus said to Nicodemus, "Except a man be born of WATER and of the SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." John 3:5.
a. Water Baptism
Of course, following a death there must be a burial. The old sinful man must be put away. "Therefore we are BURIED with Him (Jesus Christ) BY BAPTISM into death." Rom. 6:4. (Also Col. 2:12.) Repentance must be followed by water baptism in the Name of Jesus Christ for the REMISSION OF SINS (Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38). "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling upon the Name of the Lord." Acts 22:16.
b. Holy Spirit Baptism
The Holy Spirit Baptism is typical of the resurrection of Christ (Rom. 6:5; 8:11; Col. 2:12). This completes our "new birth and makes us new persons in Christ. Ezekiel prophesied about this glorious experience, "A new heart also will I give you, and a new Spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, . . . and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them." Eze. 36:26,27. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a NEW CREATURE: old things are passed away; behold, ALL THINGS ARE BECOME NEW." 2 Cor. 5:17. (Also Acts 1:8; Ro. 5:5; 8:9;14:17.) The Holy Spirit Baptism is promised to all who will obey the Word of God. (See Acts 2:4,38,39; 5:32.)
Paul emphasized, "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." 2 Cor. 7:1. "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have (received) of God, and ye are not your own?" 1 Cor. 6:19. "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy: for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." 1 Cor. 3:17. "Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit." 1 Cor. 6:20.
3. Total Cleansing
John said, "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin." 1 John 1:7. (Also 1 Pet. 1:19; Rev. 1:5.) When God cleanses us from all sin we are totally clean. It is as though we had never committed a sin. "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us." Ps. 103:12.
If you desire a new life in Christ, I urge you to repent of all your sins and experience the wonderful, powerful "new birth" of water and the Spirit! God is willing and waiting to change your life for the better, today! "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that ALL SHOULD COME TO REPENTANCE." 2 Pet. 3:9.
Baptism
IS IT IN THE PLAN OF SALVATION?
Why Be Baptized?
1. THE BIBLE SAYS SO!
JOHN 3:5 - "Except a man be born of the water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God." Most Bible commentaries agree that water here refers to baptism. ** See, Matthew-Henry, Adam Clark, Hist. Christian Church, Walker, Catholic Encycl., Oxford Dict. of Church, Interpreters Dict. of Bible, Temples Bible Dict.**
MARK 16:16 - "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." Notice how Jesus places baptism in conjunction with salvation.
1 PETER 3:21 - "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us."Also see Acts 10:6 and 48.
2. IT REMITS SIN
HEBREWS 9:22 - The application of the blood of Christ is necessary to remit sin. What then is the Biblical way to receive remission of sin? The answer to this question will also be the only way to get the Saviour's blood applied.\
LUKE 24:47 - "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name...."(Jesus)
ACTS 2:38 - "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..." The blood of Jesus is applied only through water baptism in the name of Jesus. Also see 1 John 5:8 and Acts 22:16
3. BAPTIZED INTO CHURCH
Every New Testament church was formed by those whom were baptized into the faith after believing and repenting. Gal 3:27 and 1 Cor 12:13
CHURCH AT JERUSALEM - 3000 added by baptism after receiving the word. Acts 2:41
CHURCH AT SAMARIA - Believed and were baptized, men & women. Acts - 8:12-16
CHURCH AT CAESAREA - Peter commanded them to be baptized. Acts 10:48
CHURCH AT PHILIPPI - Lydia & the Phillipian jailer baptized Acts 16:14-33
CHURCH AT CORINTH - Paul preached. They believed and were baptized. Acts 18:8
CHURCH AT EPHESUS - Paul rebaptizes those improperly baptized. Acts 19:1-6
CHURCH AT GALATIA - Believed Paul and baptized into Christ. Gal 3:27
CHURCH AT COLOSSE - They were buried with Christ in baptism. Col 2:12
CHURCH AT ROME - They died to sin, then buried in baptism. Romans 6:1-4
BAPTISM
1. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, SON & HOLY GHOST
- or -
2. IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST
Which of These Were Practiced By the Apostles in the Early Church?
The Jews, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost" (Acts 2:38).
The Samaritans. "They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus' (Acts 8:16).
The Gentiles. "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord" (Acts 10:48). (The earliest Greek manuscripts that we have say, "In the name of Jesus Christ," as do most versions today.)
The disciples of John (re-baptized). "They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 19:5).
The Apostle Paul. "Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16).
Moreover, the Epistles contain a number of references or allusions to baptism in Jesus' name.
See Romans 6:3-4; I Corinthians 1:13; 6:11; Galatians 3:27 ; Colossians 2:12; James 2:7. Matthew 28:19 was a command by Jesus to baptize in the NAME. The Apostles did not repeat the word of the command, but they did obey it as seen in the scriptures above. Since Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are titles of the manifestations of the Almighty Spirit and His body, the Apostles understood His SAVING NAME to be JESUS. Can any dare say that the Apostles disobeyed the Lord, or failed to baptize properly? THE NAME OF THE FATHER, SON, AND HOLY GHOST IS LORD JESUS CHRIST. The actions of the Apostles in the Book of Acts prove this to be true.
BAPTISM IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
HOW DID THE EARLY CHURCH INTERPRET CHRIST'S COMMAND IN MATTHEW 28:19?
ACTS 2:38, 8:16, 10:48, and 19:5 are four Biblical references that answer this question. If the Biblical record is not enough, please examine the findings of the educated, scholars, and historians.
Britannica Encyclopedia - 11th Edition, Volume 3, page 365 - Baptism was changed from the name of Jesus to words Father, Son & Holy Ghost in 2nd Century.
Canney Encyclopedia of Religion - page 53 - The early church baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus until the second century.
Hastings Encyclopedia of Religion - Volume 2 - Christian baptism was administered using the words, "in the name of Jesus." page 377. Baptism was always in the name of Jesus until time of Justin Martyr, page 389
Catholic Encyclopedia - Volume 2, page 435 - Here the authors acknowledged that the baptismal formula was changed by their church.
Schaff - Herzog Religious Encyclopedia - Volume 1, page 435 - The New Testament knows only the baptism in the name of Jesus.
Hastings Dictionary of the Bible - page 88 - It must be acknowledged that the three fold name of Matthew 28:19 does not appear to have been used by the primitive church, but rather in the name of Jesus or Lord Jesus.
IS IT AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY THAT THE NAME OF JESUS BE SPOKEN OR CALLED OVER A CANDIDATE FOR WATER BAPTISM WHEN HE IS BEING BAPTIZED? For the answer to this question, please read Acts 15:17 and James 2:7[Greek Linear].
First Century Christians INVOKED OR CALLED the name of Jesus over believers in water baptism. If, as some say, "the name of Jesus means the authority of Jesus", then so much more should the NAME, rather than the titles, be called over an individual in baptism. Read Matthew 28:18, Acts 4:12 and Colossians 2:9.
Jude 3 is an exhortation to "CONTEND FOR THE FAITH ONCE DELIVERED TO THE SAINTS." See Galatians 1:8-9 also.
Holy Spirit
THE TRUTH ABOUT SPEAKING IN TONGUES
(Biblical and Historical Proof)
by Eddie Jones
The Pentecostal phenomenon of "speaking in tongues" has created widespread controversy among modern Christendom today. Without the knowledge of the truth, which only comes to an honest heart by divine revelation, many have misunderstood the purpose of tongues. Do not be confused by theories and ideas of men; learn the truth about this important subject.
The Bible teaches three principal ways in which tongues are manifested: as the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism, as one of the nine gifts of the Spirit in the church, and in a believer’s personal devotion to God.
INITIAL EVIDENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM
Isaiah prophesied, "With stammering lips and ANOTHER TONGUE will he speak to this people." Is. 28:11. In the great commission, Jesus said, "And these signs shall follow them that believe...they shall speak with NEW TONGUES." Mark 16:17.
"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the SOUND thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit." John 3:8. As the sound of wind blowing is the evidence of its presence, so is the sound of speaking in tongues evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism.
"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a SOUND from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:14. The initial evidence of the Holy Ghost, upon the 120 disciples, was witnessed by devout Jews, out of every nation. They said one to another, "Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" Acts 2:6-8. Then Peter preached, "But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel (See Joel 2:28); And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh...Having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he (Jesus) hath shed forth this which ye now see and hear." Acts 2:1&33. Cornelius and his household spoke in tongues when they were baptized with the Holy Ghost. “They of the circumcision which believe were astonished.. .because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. FOR THEY HEARD THEM SPEAK WITH TONGUES..." Acts 10:4548. Peter confirmed,"...The Holy Ghost fell on them as on us at the beginning." Acts 11:15. The believers at Ephesus spoke in tongues when they received the Holy Ghost baptism. "And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake in tongues, and prophesied." Acts 19:1-6. When the Samaritans received the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the apostles’ hands, there was a miraculous evidence of God’s power which exceeded the miracles and signs already experienced. This prompted Simon the sorcerer to offer money to buy this power: that on whomsoever he laid hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. According to the Biblical signs that follow believers, and the experiences received at Pentecost, Cesarea and Ephesus, there should be no doubt that the Samaritans received the Holy Ghost with the same initial evidence of speaking in tongues. Acts 8:5-25. The apostle Paul was filled with the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues. Acts 9:17, I Cor. 14:18.
History also proves that speaking in tongues was the evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism in the early church, and has not ceased to be a Biblical experience among believers today.
Encyclopedia Britannica, 1972 Edition, Vol. 22, p. 75 -Tongue-speaking manifested itself early in the Christian experience. At Pentecost (Acts 2) the gift appeared as a sign of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which marked the character of the earliest Christians...During later church history, glossolalia (speaking in tongues) occurred among the mendicant friars of the 13th century, little prophets of Cevennes, the Jansenists, and the Irvingites. Tongues were found also among the early Quakers, as well as among the converts of John Wesley and George Whitefield... In modern times glossolalia has been found chiefly among Holiness and Pentecostal groups. The Saturday Evening Post, May 16, 1964, p.32 - Praying in tongues has recurred at intervals throughout the Christian era, although it did not affect large masses until early in this century.
Its advocates were quickly expelled from the established churches, whereupon they established the Pentecostal churches. For 50 years it remained the almost exclusive possession of the Pentecostal churches.
Newsweek, June 25, 1973, p.80 - The Pentecostal phenomenon has spread with surprising speed through all of the world’s major Christian churches. Why did God choose tongues for the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism? Note the following reasons:
1. Isaiah asked, "Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being His counselor hath taught Him?" Is. 40:13. God is sovereign to choose as He will without being accountable to anyone!
2. Such a marvelous experience as the baptism of the Holy Ghost demands a marvelous evidence. So God chase to speak through the believer in a language foreign to him as the outward evidence of the marvelous infilling of the Holy Ghost!
3. The tongue is the most unruly member of the body and full of deadly poison, which no man can tame. It is a world of iniquity and is set on fire of hell. Therefore, the tongue is capable of defiling the entire body. James 3:6. Before man can be fully sanctified, the tongue, which defileth, must be brought under control. Who can tame the tongue? James compares the tongue to the bit in a horse’s mouth which gives the driver complete control. James 3:3. So whoever controls the tongue controls the person. How beautiful is this glorious truth! God chose tongues, as evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism, to symbolize His complete control of a believer. And this is important for the sanctification of the individual’s body.
4. Although other signs were manifested at Pentecost, God chose tongues for the uniform sign of the Holy Spirit baptism. (Compare Acts 2:2-4, 10:46, 19:6.) Jesus said that this SIGN shall follow every believer of the gospel. Mark 16:16,17. The Jews were convinced that the Gentiles at Cesarea had received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, FOR THEY HEARD THEM SPEAK WITH TONGUES. Acts 10:45-47.
GIFT OF TONGUES IN THE CHURCH
"For by ONE SPIRIT are we ALL BAPTIZED into one body." I Cor. 12:13. “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit." I Cor. 12:4. The gifts of the Spirit are as follows: the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, the gifts of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, divers kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. But by one and the selfsame Spirit, God divides these gifts severally to every man as He will. I Cor. 12:8-11.
Since the gift of tongues is a manifestation of the Spirit (I Cor. 12:7,11), it cannot operate in a person without the Holy Ghost being resident within him. Therefore this gift is only given to believers who have been baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit evidenced by Tongue-speaking. The gift of tongues is different from the tongues as the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism. Compare the following:
1. These tongues differ in purpose. The gift of tongues, along with the gift of interpretation of tongues, has been given to some in the church to convey a message from God to the congregation as the need requires. I Cor. 12:7, 27,28. But the tongues, as evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost, is the believer’s personal experience with God, and is not designed to convey a message to the church.
2. Also these tongues differ in operation. The gift of tongues in the church is limited to two or three messages, and that by course; and one must interpret. I Cor. 14:27. But the tongues as evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism is an unlimited manifestation and requires no interpretation. Paul said, "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, EXCEPT he interpret, that the church may receive edifying." I Cor. 14:4,5. Certainly the apostle did not try to discredit or do away with the importance of tongues. Because, in comparison, he illustrated that the less honorable members of the body are necessary, and receive more abundant honor. I Cor. 12:22,23. Each gift of the Spirit has its proper time and place in the church, and when tongues are interpreted they become as important as prophecy! So Paul emphasized, "...Let all things be done unto edifying." I Cor. 14:26. To edify the church, the gift of tongues must be coupled with the gift of interpretation of tongues. To avoid confusion, Paul gave instructions to follow for the use of tongues and interpretation of tongues in the church. (See I Cor. 14:27.) He said, "If there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church: and let him speak to himself, and to God." I Cor. 14:28. Also he said, "IN THE CHURCH I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue." I Cor. 14:19. It is better for the edification of the church to speak five words of understanding than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue without a divinely inspired interpretation. However, lest anyone misunderstand the importance of tongues, Paul concluded, "Wherefore brethern, covet to prophesy, and FORBID NOT TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES." I Cor. 14:39.
"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not..." I Cor. 14:22. This Scripture deals with God’s speaking to man. (See I Cor. 14:21.) Of course, the believer should know when the Lord speaks, whether by tongues or not. But as a proof to the unbeliever, or anyone who doubts the Word of God, tongues are manifested for a miraculous sign of His presence.
Paul asked the question, "Do all speak with tongues" I Cor. 12:30. The context of this Scripture requires a negative answer, because Paul is discussing tongues as a gift of the Spirit only, and not as the evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism. (See I Cor. 12:28.) The gift of tongues is in addition to the tongues experienced with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. (By the same rule, the gift of faith is in addition to the measure of faith given a person to be saved. Compare Ram. 12:3, I Cor. 12:9.) So everyone may not receive the gift of tongues. But in every case, where the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism is recorded, "ALL" spoke in tongues. (For examples see Acts 2:4, 10:44, 19:7.)
PERSONAL DEVOTION TO GOD
Tongues are also manifested in a believer’s personal life of prayer and worship. They serve as a means of his secret communication with God in the Spirit. These tongues are not meant to be understood by men; therefore, they need no interpretation. "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries." I Cor. 14:2. "The Spirit itself maketh intercession far us with groanings which cannot be uttered." Rom. 8:26. Paul said, "If I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." I Cor.14:14,15.
These devotional tongues are also for the personal edification of the believer. They are for self-encouragement and uplifting of his spirit. Paul said, "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself..." I Cor. 14:4. So the apostle gladly stated, "I thank my Gad, I speak with tongues more than ye all." I Cor. 14:18.
How long will tongues continue to be manifested? "Whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away." I Cor. 13:8-10. The phrase, "when that which is perfect is come," is translated from the Greek phrase "to teleion". The word "teleion" is a singular neuter term which refers to Jesus Christ. Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon, p.618, defines the phrase “to teleion” as used in I Cor. 13:10: "The perfect state of all things, to be ushered in by the return of Christ from heaven." Paul said, "Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then (when that which is perfect is come) shall I know even as also I am known." I Cor. 13:12. When the church, having reached her state of perfection, stands face to face in the presence of God, there will be no need for prophecies, tongues and knowledge. But until that which is perfect (Jesus Christ) is come, that which is in part will remain. And as long as there remains prophecies and knowledge, tongues shall not cease. So Paul instructed the church to COME BEHIND IN NO GIFT, WAITING FOR THE COMING OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. I Cor. 1:7.
Believe the Truth! The Pentecostal phenomenon is for you today! If you desire the greatest experience God has offered to mankind, I urge you to repent, and be baptized with water in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost, evidenced by speaking in tongues! Acts 2:4,38,39

WE ALLOW THE OPERATION OF THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS because In the Bible we read, "When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation."-I Corinthians 14:
Our Past I began preaching at age fourteen while attending Christian Life Tabernacle in Memphis, TN, pastored by Rev. Billy Lewis. Continuing part-time preaching and evangelizing until the age of twenty-one, when I became a full-time evangelist for two years. In 1991 I met and married Tanya McKinney. Tanya is a talented musician and singer with a heart for teaching. Together we have two children, Robyne and Sawyer. In May 1996 we responded to GOD's call and moved to Augsburg, Germany on the A.I.M. program to serve as Pastor for an eight month term. It was during this tenure that missions took root in our hearts. Upon returning to the US, we accepted the pastorate of Christian Life Tabernacle in Memphis, Tennessee. While in Memphis we founded Tabernaculo de Vida Cristiana, a Spanish church. This Spanish work is now pastored by Rev. Julio E. May Jr. In 1998 we resigned the pastorate in Memphis upon receiving an appointment as Missionaries to Germany. Working as missionaries over the next few years we were privileged to work in many European countries. Some of those countries include Germany, Poland, Czeck Republic, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and The Netherlands. After resigning our UPC Foreign Missions appointment in September of 2002 we moved to picturesque East Tennessee where we founded The Pentecostal Church of Johnson City, TN. The Pentecostal Church became a safe haven to many lost souls under our leadership. A passion for souls and desire for revival caused TPC to become the fastest growing church in East Tennessee. Our Present In May of 2008, we answered the call of the Lord to carry this precious gospel to the country of Ireland and subsequently resigned as pastor of The Pentecostal Church of Johnson City. Shortly thereafter, at the ALJC General Ministries Conference 2008 in Louisville, KY, we were appointed as Missionaries to the Republic Of Ireland. In 1998 while visiting Dublin, Ireland, the Lord placed a burden on our hearts for the people of the republic of Ireland, a burden we have carried for over ten years. We are thrilled that God has called us to work in this great nation. We are presently on deputation, raising our support for the work in Ireland. Our Future We feel a heavy burden for the Republic of Ireland. With nearly 5,000,000 people in this great nation there is much work to be done. This fertile field is ripe and ready to be harvested and we are going in with sickle in hand. Our goal to plant new churches around the country and work with the Potter’s in Waterford as well. Having successfully started three thriving churches over the last twelve years, church planting has developed into the primary focus of our ministry. It's our desire to see at least 50 churches planted in Ireland before the coming of the Lord.
The Euro (€ EUR) is the currency of 12 of the 25 nations that form the European Union (and some outside it). It is the result of the most significant monetary reform in Europe since the Roman Empire. Though the introduction of the euro can be seen simply as a mechanism for perfecting the Single European Market, facilitating free trade between the members of the Eurozone, the euro is also a key part of the European project of political integration.
Most Irish people are of Celtic ethnicity, though there is a sizable English minority. The official languages are Irish (Gaelic), the native Celtic language, and English, which is constitutionally described as a secondary official language. Learning Irish is compulsory in education, but English is by far the predominant language. Public signs are usually bilingual and national media in Irish also exist. People living in predominantly Irish speaking communities (the Gaeltacht) are limited to the low tens of thousands in isolated pockets largely on the western seaboard. The Republic of Ireland is officially 92% Roman Catholic; however, there has been a massive decline in full adherence to Roman Catholicism among Irish Catholics. Between 1996 and 2001, regular Mass attendance, already previously in decline, declined from 60% to 48% (it had been 90%+ in 1973), and all but two of its priest-training seminaries have either closed or are expected to close soon. The Church was also hit in the 1990s by a series of sexual scandals and cover-up charges against its hierarchy. In 1995, after an approximately 58-year ban, voters chose to re-legalize divorce in the Republic.
The Republic of Ireland is a small, modern, trade-dependent economy with growth averaging a robust 10% in 1995-2000. Agriculture, once the most important sector, is now dwarfed by industry, which accounts for 38% of GDP, about 80% of exports, and employs 28% of the labour force. Although exports remain the primary engine for Ireland's robust growth, the economy is also benefiting from a rise in consumer spending and recovery in both construction and business investment. On paper, Ireland is the second largest software producer in the world, after the United States. In fact, a lot of foreign software, and sometimes music, is filtered through Ireland to avail of Ireland's non-taxing of royalties from copyrighted goods. The monetary system is based around the Euro.
The official name of the country is Eire, or in the English language, Ireland. The term "Republic of Ireland" came to be used as its name. Population: 4,200,000 Area: 27,135 sq. mi. Capital: Dublin Languages: Irish, English Religions: Roman Catholic, 92%; Church of Ireland (Anglican), 3% Northwest of continental Europe and west of neighboring Great Britain, Ireland, the Emerald Isle, is comprised of 32 counties—six of which are ruled by Britain and are referred to as Northern Ireland. The other 26 form the politically autonomous Republic of Ireland. The Irish republic gained its independence from England in 1922 with Dublin as its capital. Ireland is experiencing a huge population explosion due to it becoming part of the European Union. The whole face of Ireland is changing with the arrival of many thousands of immigrants and refugees. For over 30 years conflict has existed between the Catholics and Protestants over the rule of Northern Ireland. For more info: www.gov.ie www.discoverireland.com
